How to calculate cents per point without inflating the saving
Calculate cents per point using equivalent cash prices and unavoidable reward-booking charges. Avoid inflated comparisons and false precision.
Compare the cash you actually avoid paying with the points you would redeem.
Use the cash price of an equivalent option you would willingly purchase, not an inflated premium fare you would never pay. Enter all unavoidable cash charges on the reward booking and the total number of points needed. Compare equivalent cancellation terms and baggage before treating the two options as substitutes.
Cash avoided = equivalent cash price − reward-booking cash charges. Cents per point = cash avoided ÷ points × 100. The illustrative defaults give ($350 − $50) ÷ 25,000 × 100 = 1.2 cents per point. This is the value for this choice, not a fixed market price for the program’s points.
If the reward booking costs more cash than the alternative, the value may be negative. Zero points produces no meaningful per-point figure, so the tool asks for a positive points amount. The calculation excludes foregone earnings, transfer bonuses, status benefits, opportunity cost and tax consequences. Verify inventory, transfer terms and all fees before moving points; availability can change and a transfer may be irreversible.
